Developing Expertise
January, 2007
This month, we will be attending a three day intensive session on "coaching to develop expertise" in Washington, D.C. This topic often arises in our work with professionals and organizational leaders, especially when they are making a transition to more challenging or novel roles.
What is expertise?
When we draw on our own expertise, we are seeing both the uniqueness and familiarity of a topic so we respond in a creative and grounded way. This is what a chess master does when she glances at a chess board; what a jazz musician does in the middle of improvising; and what we are doing when we are at peak performance.
Developing expertise helps coaching clients increase their capacity to have direct and reliable access to what they have learned and experienced.
By focusing on this method, practicing it and receiving feedback, coaching clients will be able to take huge steps in their expertise — which will give them more confidence and thereby facilitate more expertise — and on and on, gathering momentum as you go.
